RAN

We have now entered the 4th day of the Rolex Middle Sea race 2012 on-board Rán II. We have now completed nearly 75 hours at sea. We still see Pantelleria, the island west to Sicily. But just about. We are now in the stretch going onto south east towards the island of Lampadusa. On the map we are close to the north African coast, to Tunisia, although we will not see it, some 60 miles away maybe from Lampadusa island? The sea state is calm, no rain still, sun behind the clouds, sailing 11 knots of boat speed, lunch been served on deck, happy souls!

Trustmarque Quokka

As I sit at the chart table writing our second blog entry I can feel Quokka heeling to new breeze and hear the on deck team working hard to squeeze everything they can out of it. It’s still only 8 knots but this is the manna we have savoured at any given opportunity over what has been a largely windless 48 hours.

Setting out with a light forecast we did wonder what challenges would be presented when we hit negative current in the Messina Straits. However the wind our skipper ordered dutifully turned up and we had a fantastic spinnaker reach yesterday afternoon with just under 20 knots of southerly breeze helping us make short shift of the 2 knot current. Exiting the straits, we peeled to an A sail, hardened up to head for Stromboli and powering along at a steady 9 to 10 knots in glorious sunshine.

Our fun was short lived and soon the wind started to drop off as we hit our first wind hole. When the wind dropped off completely, we dropped the headsail and celebrated Barry’s 35th wedding anniversary with a cup of tea and a chocolate bar. Off watch yesterday evening I lost count if the number of sail changes I heard up on deck in response to the light and variable wind. At midnight I relieved Kylie trimming the A1 and eking out phenomenal speeds of 2 to 3 knots, matching the true windspeed. What a difference half a day makes!

4 hours later our watches changed again just as we were passing Stromboli. I lay in my bunk listening to descriptions of eruptions and lava flows and popped my head out the hatch to see. After a while sleep became the more pressing option and so I missed all the volcanic action!

Today has been a hot and mostly windless day where we have taken advantage of every elusive puff to get Quokka on her toes. In between periods of ghosting along under A1 or No 1 Jib and sitting motionless with sails providing little more than shade for the crew on the leeward rail, there’s been time for plenty for banter. Morale is still high…. But if we don’t get wind soon, we may find out how the pressure of starvation impacts our jovial spirits!

RAN at Pantelleria

We are abeam the island of Pantelleria, sailing past it from north west. The 70 miles from Trapani were under 10 knots of wind from north west. So from where we are to Lampadusa island which is our next way point, it is 82 miles. We are still sailing with 10 knots. This wind will be dying shortly according to latest forecast. But so far it is a reality and a true pleasure to experience…We are holding our breath; so lucky to now have constant wind, no rain, and no abnormal gusts. Crew on deck is happy and still quite concentrated: we know these seas can be deceiving. One minute 5 knots next minute 25 knots. So in other words, happy days! We are catching up after all. Another third of the race was achieved: we have about 190 miles or so to go till grand Harbour in Valetta.
As for competition, Esimit is approximately 50 miles ahead of us, Stig is visible at around 5 miles behind us, Med Spirit 70 is next to her approximately same distance. Again, so far so good, patience has paid, keeping very close to where the wind was during the night…

Breakfast was served, muesli-ish. The kettle is on for the mid-watch rotations for coffees and teas. Pantellaria is behind the clouds in the background. Nice view on deck although quite misty and cloudy.

RAN HALF WAY!

We have just passed the famous and only Trapani. Which means we are half way in the course of the race. Hurrah! Let’s hope the second half will be shorter time. Challenge to take up!

Had we passed Trapani during the day, maybe we would have see this Medieval town, known apparently for its Basilica-Sanctuary “Madonna di Trapani” built early 1300?… Maybe next time.
Meanwhile after some wind and some distance to our competition Stig, we are back in our usual situation. Here is how it goes: “humm the wind had shut down…” – “Well, do you think we go back to the drifter?” (See previous blog ;-)…”Humm yes that is the best option, there is really no other option right now”… So here comes our best buddy, the drifter. And this is how it is done on Rán II these days! We have now 32 miles to the island of Marettimo which is that little island west to Sicily, heading 240 degrees from where we are.

OPTIMUM 3 ASPIDA

Optimum 3 Aspida. After a long day of trying to catch elusive zephyrs we finally got into some solid breeze that carried us to off Palermo. We are now battling it out again with Cantankerous and Veruna in light airs. This is going to be a long race!

RAN

We are nearly closing the 2nd day at sea on Rán II in the Rolex Middle Sea Race 2012. We are still 80 or so miles till Trappani, going at the amazing speed of 5 full knots of boat speed! We are flying compared to earlier in the day. That means we should be at Trappani in 16 hours or so, middle of the night. Then we will have reached only half way of this race. This is the slowest offshore race Rán II has sailed… New experience for some. We are cutting on food rations as we will not have enough until arrival whenever that will be, and not what we expected at last weather report last friday. When the wind is here, it is for a very short time so it could even be later than that. The sea state is flat and calm. The boat glides gently on the water. For those off watch in their bunks down below, the noise of the water on the carbon fibre hull sounds like an endless water fountain. At first one could think that it is raining. On the contrary; the weather is warm, very sunny. Stig, our direct competition is at visible distance. With Stig, we have been match racing since the start of the race. Taking each other over when we can. We are now in the lead, until they take over again! At least some happening in this un-eventful part of the race so far.
