{"id":997,"date":"2014-10-21T10:29:17","date_gmt":"2014-10-21T09:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.rolexmiddlesearace.com\/?p=997"},"modified":"2019-05-26T23:30:39","modified_gmt":"2019-05-26T22:30:39","slug":"scarlet-oyster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.rolexmiddlesearace.com\/?p=997","title":{"rendered":"Scarlet Oyster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rolexmiddlesearace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/scarlet-oyster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1001\" title=\"scarlet oyster\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.rolexmiddlesearace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/scarlet-oyster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.rolexmiddlesearace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/scarlet-oyster.jpg 720w, https:\/\/blog.rolexmiddlesearace.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/scarlet-oyster-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a>After a slow day Scarlet is around 15NM NW of the island of Filicudi, wind<\/p>\n<p>is light at 3 to 4 knots and the crew have worked hard all day to keep boat<br \/>\nspeed up in hot conditions.<br \/>\nOur position has changed over the hours with us leading class and even IRC<br \/>\noverall at some points yesterday, which has certainly helped to keep the<br \/>\ncrew focused as we sailed by a cloud enshrouded Mount Etna yesterday<br \/>\nlunchtime and drifted past a grumbling Stromboli volcano with streams of<br \/>\nlava running down its side, our companion for most of last night in the<br \/>\nlight conditions.<br \/>\nThe race course has so far lived up to its reputation as one of the most<br \/>\nbeautiful in the world, it could well live up to its reputation as one of the<br \/>\ntoughest tactically and also weather wise with the forecast showing testing<br \/>\nconditions of 35 to 40 knots for us as we round Sicily and head South and<br \/>\nthen East past the islands of Pantelleria and Lampedusa.<br \/>\nThe international nature of the Global Yacht Racing crew adds a great<br \/>\nflavour to the race as Germans exchange sail trim tips with Russians, Dutch,<br \/>\nCanadians and Americans, as well as a few Brits of course!<br \/>\nThe crew work improves all the time as we change from headsails to Light A1<br \/>\nasymmetrics then Peel to running A2&#8217;s. Skippers Andy and Ross calling the<br \/>\nchanges at short notice as the wind oscillates and our boat speed fluctuates.<\/p>\n<p>Ross\u2019 knowledge of the yacht is a fantastic asset as we make great<br \/>\ncall after great call to keep what is effectively a heavy yacht hooked into<br \/>\nour much lighter competitors.<br \/>\nHopefully this will be our last night of drifting as the breeze is set to go<br \/>\nup on Tuesday ahead of the predicted sleigh ride on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>All to play for on board as we chase down a podium position!<br \/>\nAndy.       <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a slow day Scarlet is around 15NM NW of the island of Filicudi, wind is light at 3 to 4 knots and the crew have worked hard all day to keep boat speed up in hot conditions.
